Bear Minimum: What’s the Simplest Setup that Can Do the Job?

I always say we have to get really good at simple. We have moved past the times of complexity. A lot is going on, a lot is happening in every space and every area, and simple is needed now. You want to be able to come in, do what you need to do, and leave. The overkill of features, “you can do this, you can do all of these things on one thing,” doesn’t really work for something you set up for a single purpose. If you have set up something for your customers or team, you have a reason that it was set up, then it should be really simple. You should be able to get to the point in this setup. It should be simple enough that someone coming in doesn’t have to use a lot of mental load to figure out what they need to do, where they need to go, or how they should be able to operate it.

When it takes so long, or when it’s not usable or even user-friendly, it’s not something people want to keep logging in to see. And then you see that you’ve paid for it or locked in a year’s subscription or two years on your end, and the people you paid the subscription for are not even using it. You can’t really get them to come back to the tools unless they are your employees. You can always just tell them to come in. If they are external users, you can’t force them to come in. Even if they have paid you, they are very okay with abandoning that money just so they don’t have to deal with your very complicated setup. What’s the simplest setup that can do the job? Start with only what is necessary instead of automatically building the maximum.
