The Evolution From Complex to Simple Tools

At times, businesses and teams evolve from elaborate systems toward simpler ones. Complexity isn’t automatically maturity. Sometimes maturity means realizing you don’t need all the machinery anymore. What I’ve noticed with some of the businesses that have been coming my way in the past, let’s say, two or three years, has been the move from complexity to simple.

A lot of the businesses, as they grow and mature, have realized that they do not need so much. Of course, they still want to be able to see how their team members have been performing on the project, on their tasks, on their action items. But they realize they do not need all 600 features that come. I’m sure some teams love all these features, they want to do all of that. But with smaller teams or teams that are not so technical, they really just want to be able to come in and do what they need to do and go. There’s no need to have to constantly update or wait for the next feature to complement the next feature, or wait for another feature that is dependent on something coming. They just want to create something simple. I’m not sure why this shift is happening, or maybe it’s because of the overload of so many things, new products, features, but I’ve come to realize that sometimes simple is always better. With a team that is doing a lot in volume, they want to be able to see everything and get to it. And even if they are not doing a lot of activities and just focus on one thing, they really just want something easy to operate.
