Custom Field Descriptions in Wrike

Large Wrike accounts always accumulate custom fields. Managing an account with nearly 300 custom fields across multiple teams and spaces means that remembering which field does what, the team it belongs to, what data it expects, and why it exists is no longer feasible without documentation.

In mid-2025, Wrike released a highly requested update letting you add a description to any custom field, visible within the platform itself.

Admins and users with custom field editing rights can add a description of up to 1,000 characters to any custom field. Descriptions support rich formatting. The description is visible as a tooltip when hovering over the field in table view, item view, and the panel where you add a custom field to a task or project. Tooltips show the field type, available options for single or multi-select fields, and other relevant field metadata.

At the admin level, descriptions appear in the Custom Field Editor and Custom Field Management view. A Quick Search function lets you search for fields by their description text, which is useful when a field’s name is similar to another but the description clarifies the distinction.

What descriptions are good for

The primary use is reducing selection errors. A task with 30 custom fields visible, which is not unusual for cross-tagged tasks in accounts where different departments share spaces, means that someone filling in the wrong field is more likely to happen.

A secondary use is admin governance. Auditing custom fields to identify what can be retired is much faster when each field has a clear description that includes why it was created and which process it supports. Descriptions make cleanup sessions faster.

Alongside field descriptions, Wrike released a Copy Entire Table button at both account-level and space-level custom field management views. This copies the full table of custom fields, including descriptions to your clipboard for pasting into any spreadsheet application. For teams that still want an external record, this makes it significantly easier to keep one in sync without manual entry.
